Drawing, edit, artwork, art piece, we’ve all heard these terms someplace, but what do they ACTUALLY mean, and when is the appropriate time to use them?
To start off, let’s have a look at the definitions of the words DRAWING and EDIT, two terms that don’t get used correctly very frequently. A DRAWING is an artwork created 100% by hand, without tracing or manipulating any kind of photo or another artist’s work. In order to create a drawing, a reference picture CAN be used, as long as it is not traced! An EDIT, on the other hand, is a MANIPULATION of a pre-existing image, for example: Painting over a picture, adding filters to a picture, or tracing a picture. In other words, an edit is an image which has been “tweaked”.
Alrighty! Now that we’ve got the terms cleared up a little, let’s talk about some common MISCONCEPTIONS about the two:
It takes less effort to create edits than it takes to create drawings.
—> False! Some edits take hours of work and talent to create, whereas certain drawings can take less than an hour!
Edits aren’t artworks.
—> Totally wrong! Edits are just a different form of art. Just because they aren’t created 100% from scratch doesn’t make them less of an artwork!
All digital artworks are edits.
—> Yet again, a false statement. Drawings can be created digitally as well, just because we use pixels instead of physical paint doesn’t mean our drawings are edits!
Drawings and edits are both forms of art and are equally valuable. None is better than the other. They both require practice and passion to create, and are each beautiful in their own way!
—> Correct! There’s no better way to say it.
That’s about it for this blog post, hope you guys enjoyed the quick read and that you learned a thing or two in the process!
